The Stem Cell Research Consortium at UC Merced consists of a multidisciplinary group of faculty that are focused on understanding the mechanisms that control cell fate decisions and also on ways to predict cell behavior. Faculty are affiliated with the School of Natural Sciences and School of Engineering, and the Quantitative and Systems Biology (QSB) and Biological Engineering and Small-Scale Technologies (BEST) graduate programs.
Research in stem cell biology is critical for our understanding of human development and health. Stem cells have the potential to regenerate other cells in the body.
This type of treatment, called regenerative therapy, could eventually treat conditions such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and heart disease; stroke, cancer, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and spinal cord injuries.
UC Merced’s central location is a significant advantage in promoting cross-institutional collaborations throughout the state. The campus will eventually serve as an anchor to build much-needed biotechnology and high technology industries in the Valley.
Research Excellence
These are the distinctive qualities of the Stem Cell Research Consortium at UC Merced:
Multidisciplinary Approach
Stem Cell Research at UC Merced brings together engineers, molecular biologists, computational biologists and mathematicians to redefine how stem cells are studied.
Focused Study
Research focuses on understanding individual stem cell behavior and how it affects tissue organization and regeneration.
Expertise
Our highly experienced faculty uses biological systems to develop state-of-the-art tools that control and manipulate individual cells.
Distinguished Affiliations
Participating faculty are affiliated with the schools of Natural Sciences and Engineering, and the Quantitative and Systems Biology (QSB) and Biological Engineering and Small-Scale Technologies (BEST) graduate programs.
